Tonal Portrait Drawing is based on academic principals. We will begin with basics, such as: Drafting Geometry, Shadows in Perspectives, and Constructive Drawing. Students will learn how to find Tonal Solution of the composition how to balance Negative/Positive space, with editing. Discussion of techniques will also be included. A short demonstration will be given each class session. Limit 8 students per class each student will receive lots of attention, beginning drawing classes are suggested. Weekly Syllabus
• WEEK 1 – learning the basics of proportional head drawing eyes, ears nose mouths, hair etc.
• WEEK 2- Proportional head Drawing by age and ethnicity.
• WEEK 3 – Pastel drawing from the portrait photographs; how to choose paper, palette, stroke application, interpret light, etc.
• WEEK 4- Finish portrait drawing from last week. Discussion of combining pastel with other media in preparation for next week.

• Sketch paper 18″x24″ or 16″x20″

From quick sketches to rich, painterly applications, experiment with pastels as you become comfortable with this versatile medium. Work from still life, and landscapes, as you try different papers and methods of application. Because class size is limited to (8) students, each student will receive lots of individual attention. Some drawing experience is required for this class. The cost is $75, Material list is available upon request.

WEEKLY SYLLABUS
• WEEK 1 – Detailed discussion of types of soft pastel, papers, application techniques, etc. Drawing of a simple still life of basic forms on both grey and white papers.
• WEEK 2 – Development of a finished composition of neutral still life objects with a limited palette of pastels.
• WEEK 3 – Pastel drawing of colorful still-life objects exploring the use of a full color palette and learning to apply and mix pastels; choosing type/color of paper.
• WEEK 4 – Using personal photographs, explore landscape composition, light, perspective, and color in pastel.

Medium vine charcoal and #6B Charcoal pencil
Padded drawing board ( with newsprint base)
Grey pastel paper
Black, white, and medium value grey pastels

Supplies
Rembrandt soft pastels, box of 30 ½ inch sticks
Paper, Strathmore “500” series charcoal paper 18″ x 24″ in assorted tints or purchase “Canson MiTientes” paper individual sheets 18″ x 24″ in neutral shades, grey, tan; 4 sheets to start
Drawing board for 18″ x 24″ paper, this board should be either padded with brown wrapping paper or “ironed newspaper”, or buy a pad of newsprint for this purpose
Large clips, get the kind that are black with silver “wings”
Tape, strong tape such as duct tape to fasten your padding to the board; artists tape for masking drawings
2 cheap brushes for “scrubbing” out pastels, one small and one large, these should be bristle or stiff nylon; cheap soft brush, such as for makeup or an imitation sable brush
White vinyl erase and or kneaded eraser

Optional supplies
Pastel drawing can be done with many different brands of pastels that vary in softness
We will discuss these and also the various papers that may be used; you will eventually want to buy a fixative; Krylon workable fixative is a good choice

Students will learn how to paint in acrylics using tested methods of contemporary painters. Principles of design will be presented and practiced. Color theory and its application to landscape painting will be highlighted. The goal of the class is to confirm and help develop the skills, perceptions, and self-expression of each artist as they are met at their individual level of skill.
